Perenti Limited
Investment Thesis
Perenti is the world's largest listed underground mining services contractor, generating margins above its ASX peers while carrying roughly half their leverage. The business has delivered on its own guidance for five consecutive years, deleveraged materially, and shifted its revenue mix toward lower-risk jurisdictions, all while trading largely sideways over the past twelve months. The investment case rests on whether the market has fully credited that quality shift, and does not require gold to rally further or margins to expand beyond current levels, only that the business keeps executing as it has for the past five years.
The Business
Perenti runs two main divisions: Contract Mining (underground and surface mining services, around 73% of FY27 group revenue) and Drilling Services (mineral exploration and grade-control drilling, around 25%), plus a small residual technical services unit. The group operates across 12 countries but has deliberately shifted its book toward Australia and North America, now 63% of Contract Mining revenue, away from higher-risk African jurisdictions. Its Barminco brand has built underground mining scale over two decades that smaller rivals cannot easily replicate, and it renews long-term mining contracts at a rate above 90%.
Recent Performance
The shares have traded largely sideways near $2.35 over the past year, lagging the re-rating seen across gold-exposed equities despite record margins. Revenue fell 0.8% in FY26 to $3,463 million as the group exited lower-margin African contracts and non-core surface assets, masking an underlying improvement: EBIT margin rose to 9.0% from 8.3% the year before. The market has not yet rewarded that mix shift.
Outlook
Revenue growth is expected to accelerate over FY27 and FY28 as the Bellevue and Fourmile underground contracts ramp toward full production, before settling toward a lower structural growth rate longer term. EBITDA margin is expected to hold broadly steady from FY26 levels as the divested surface business exits the revenue base, while EBIT margin continues to climb as amortisation on an acquired contract intangible runs off. None of this requires gold prices to move from current elevated levels.
Key Risks
Three risks dominate. Gold sits near the top of its historical range; a sustained fall toward $3,000 an ounce would meaningfully slow new contract conversion and compress margins. The discount rate used to value the business is itself contested, and a more conservative assumption than our mechanical rate would materially change the analytical conclusion, a genuine modelling debate rather than a company-specific flaw. A new chief executive with strong external credentials but no company-specific track record could misallocate the capital freed up from a recent divestment.
What to Watch
The thesis-defining event is the first-half FY27 result in February 2027, which will confirm whether the Bellevue and Fourmile ramps are converting at the margins we have assumed.
- Feb 2027 1H27 results, Bellevue/Fourmile ramp validation — confirms whether the new underground contracts are hitting planned production and margins.
- Aug 2027 FY27 full-year guidance delivery — a sixth consecutive year of meeting guidance would reinforce management's credibility.
Business Quality
Company Description
Perenti provides mining services rather than owning mineral resources itself, earning fees under multi-year contracts to mine and drill on behalf of gold, copper and other miners. Contract Mining, roughly three-quarters of group revenue, covers both underground and surface fleet operation across 20 mine sites in 12 countries. Drilling Services, around a quarter of revenue, supplies exploration and grade-control drilling to more than 160 clients. A smaller technical services unit rounds out the group. Management has recently exited a lower-margin surface mining unit and reduced exposure to African operations, concentrating the portfolio in Australia and North America.
Where the Growth Is
Contract Mining is the growth engine, forecast at around 73% of FY27 group revenue. The segment is being reshaped by the Bellevue and Fourmile underground contract ramps and by a structural shift in the mining industry itself: open-pit reserves are depleting globally, pushing miners underground where Perenti holds scale advantages few competitors can match. Conversion of the group's $6.4 billion North American pipeline over the next one to three years represents a meaningful swing factor for the business that is not fully reflected in current consensus assumptions.
Competitive Position
Perenti's advantage rests on scale and trust rather than pricing power. It is the largest listed underground mining services provider globally, a position built over more than two decades of fleet investment and safety record, both difficult and expensive to replicate. Clients renew contracts at a rate above 90%, reflecting the cost and safety risk of switching mid-operation. That said, the moat is narrow rather than wide: rivals such as Byrnecut in Australia and Redpath in North America compete effectively for the same underground work, and Perenti's returns on capital, while above its cost of capital, carry only a modest spread. The advantage looks durable for the next five to seven years rather than indefinitely.
Management & Capital Discipline
Management has deleveraged the balance sheet from 1.3 times net debt to EBITDA to 0.4 times over five years, divested the non-core surface unit, and returned $83 million to shareholders in FY26, all while delivering on guidance for five straight years, a track record uncommon among ASX mid-caps. The honest caveat: incoming chief executive Torres brings strong external credentials but has only two months' tenure and no Perenti-specific track record, leaving capital allocation of the recently freed-up divestment proceeds as an open question.
Financial Position
The balance sheet is a genuine strength. Net debt sits at just 0.4 times EBITDA, well below the 0.8-1.0 times carried by listed peers, backed by $911 million of available liquidity. Combined with $6.2 billion of contracted work already in hand, the group could comfortably absorb a moderate commodity downturn without covenant stress, and has room to fund growth capex, buybacks or bolt-on acquisitions without straining the balance sheet.
