Macmahon Holdings
Thesis
Macmahon is a genuinely well-run business: ten straight years of hitting guidance, a balance sheet moving toward net cash, and returns on capital that lead its peer group. Quality and price are different questions, however, and the current price requires several favourable assumptions to hold simultaneously for the market's view to be justified.
The Business
Macmahon runs two businesses under one roof. Mining services ($1,934m of FY26 revenue, roughly 74% of the group) covers surface and underground contract mining for gold, copper, lithium and coal producers across Australia and Indonesia. Civil construction ($672m, 26% of revenue) builds infrastructure and earthworks, a business that scaled sharply after the 2024 Decmil acquisition. The combination gives Macmahon a counter-cyclical buffer that pure mining contractors lack, and a broader client base to bid larger, longer-dated contracts.
Recent Performance
FY26 revenue grew 8.0% to $2,619m, a moderation after a much stronger prior expansion, as underground mining ramped and Decmil's civil contribution normalised into a full year. Earnings before interest and tax margin held at 6.8%, and return on capital employed reached 22%, roughly double the level of four years ago. The share price has performed strongly alongside these results, and the market is effectively underwriting continued execution at this elevated level of returns.
Outlook
Management expects revenue growth to decelerate over the next few years as underground contract wins convert into revenue and the civil pipeline matures. EBITDA margin is expected to compress modestly over the same period, a structural effect: civil work carries thinner margins than mining, and its growing share of the group mix dilutes the average even as absolute earnings continue to rise. Earnings per share growth is expected to slow correspondingly, from a strong pace this year to a more modest rate further out.
Our valuation work draws on four independent approaches, discounted cash flow, trading multiples, asset value and transaction comparables. These converge in a reasonably tight band, which gives confidence the underlying estimate is not an artefact of any single method or assumption.
Key Risks
A sustained downturn in commodity prices would delay contract awards and slow order book replenishment as mining clients pull back capital spending. Gold currently trades near multi-year highs, which limits the near-term probability of this risk but does not remove it over a multi-year holding period. Macmahon's 22% return on capital, roughly ten percentage points above the peer average, is also likely to compress toward peer levels over time as NRW Holdings and Perenti pursue the same diversified, multi-commodity model. Separately, variable consideration on civil contracts jumped 5.4 times to $102m in FY26, and any material rejection or reduction of these claims would dent confidence in the civil segment more broadly, even though the claims are spread across multiple projects rather than concentrated in one dispute.
What to Watch
The thesis-defining event is the H1 FY27 result in February 2027, which will confirm whether underground revenue is tracking toward the run-rate target management has flagged.

- Ongoing Underground contract awards — conversion of the $13.8bn tender pipeline into confirmed work.
Business
Company Description
Macmahon Holdings is a diversified mining and civil contractor listed on the ASX. Mining services, its largest division at roughly 74% of revenue, spans surface and underground contract mining across gold, copper, lithium and coal operations in Australia and the Batu Hijau project in Indonesia. Civil construction, the remaining 26%, delivers infrastructure and earthworks and expanded materially following the 2024 acquisition of Decmil. The two divisions share equipment, labour and project management capability, giving Macmahon a broader tender base than single-segment competitors.
Where the Growth Is
Underground mining is the key swing factor. It currently contributes around 19% of mining division revenue and management is targeting a $750m run-rate, supported by post-period contract wins exceeding $1bn in combined value. As these contracts ramp through FY27 and FY28, this segment is the single most important variable in the forward earnings path.
Competitive Position
Macmahon's most durable advantage is a ten-year record of meeting or beating its own guidance, unmatched among ASX-listed mining services peers and a genuine trust asset when bidding for long-dated contracts. That advantage is paired with the strongest balance sheet in the peer set. Neither is permanent: NRW Holdings and Perenti are both pursuing the same diversified, multi-commodity model, and the competitive gap that currently supports Macmahon's above-peer returns is narrowing rather than widening. We estimate the current edge has a shelf life of around five years before competitors largely close the gap.
Management & Capital Discipline
Over the past five years, management has directed capital toward reducing leverage, lifting fully franked dividends, and funding the Decmil acquisition at a disciplined price, all while capital intensity as a share of revenue has steadily declined. The Decmil integration has outperformed initial expectations in its first full year. One honest observation: management's commentary credits execution for recent results but underweights how much of the current strength comes from elevated gold and copper prices and a historically tight labour market, both external tailwinds rather than company-specific achievements.
Financial Position
The balance sheet is a genuine strength. Net debt has fallen steadily and the company is on a trajectory toward net cash within the next few years, supported by capital expenditure that is declining as a share of revenue even as the asset base matures. This gives Macmahon capacity to weather a commodity downturn without financial stress, and optionality for further bolt-on acquisitions or accelerated shareholder returns if the cycle turns favourable.
